M83

Fantasy [2LP]

Vinyl: $35.98 Buy

Over the span of two decades, M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez has firmly established himself as an artist whose work transcends mere escapism in favor of full-on worldbuilding. Whether it be via his celebrated studio albums, film soundtracks, or compositions for stage productions, Gonzalez has proven that nothing surpasses his ability to perfectly encapsulate a specific time, emotion, or sense of place.

Now with Fantasy, the Platinum selling, GRAMMY nominated artist returns with his most personal album to date. Featuring long-time collaborator Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Joe Berry, M83s touring keyboardist and sax player, the album was born out of extended jam sessions that lasted nearly a year. The result is an exuberant, live-sounding record where trademark M83 goosebump moments abound.

Created between Palm Springs, California and Hilo, Hawai'i, V is the first double album from the Hawaiian-New Zealand singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Ruban Nielson's Unknown Mortal Orchestra band. Designed to play as one continuous movement and road-tested on dry California freeways, V is the definitive Unknown Mortal Orchestra car record. It's also the fifth full-length album Ruban has released in twelve years. Across fourteen sunbleached songs - written solo or with his brother Kody - Ruban draws from the rich traditions of West Coast AOR, yacht rock, weirdo pop and Hawaiian Hapa-haole music. Over a laidback blend of singalong anthems and cinematic instrumentals, he evokes blue skies, afternoons spent lounging by hotel swimming pools and the alluring darkness that lurks below perfect, pristine surfaces. It's a duality expressed in the dilapidated sunset blues and the saltcorroded soul Ruban explores through tracks like 'Layla' and 'Nadja. ' During the pandemic's early days, Ruban reunited with Kody at a cousin's wedding in Hawai'i. With assistance from their father, Chris Nielson (saxophone/flute) and longstanding Unknown Mortal Orchestra member Jake Portrait, they brought everything Ruban had been thinking about together. The result was V, due for release on March 3, 2023, through Jagjaguwar. When they talked about records that moved them in that spine-shivering manner, Ruban started thinking about the 70s AM radio rock and 80s pop songs that had lurked on the edge of his subconscious mind for most of his life. He wanted to write his version of records like that, leading to the two glorious uptempo singles Unknown Mortal Orchestra released in 2021, 'Weekend Run' and 'That Life'. However, the golden good times never last forever. Not long after, health issues began to plague his extended family. Putting his recordings aside, he helped his mother and his uncle move home from New Zealand and Portland to Hawai'i, and began dividing his time between Hawai'i and Palm Springs. During this period he reconnected with his relatives, reassessed his past, and started to look at things with fresh eyes. Hawai'i brought back memories of the darker side of his parents' lifestyle as entertainers. On those trips, he heard those classic AM radio rock records everywhere. They were inextricably intertwined with the palm trees, swimming pools, and glamorized hedonism he'd internalized from his childhood. There's a type of music in Hawai'i called Hapa-haole (Half white). You can hear it expressed in signature Unknown Mortal Orchestra style through the humid guitar-led atmosphere of V's penultimate song, 'I Killed Captain Cook'. Although the songs are presented in a traditional Hawaiian manner, they're mostly sung in English. Having been influenced by Hawaiian music since Unknown Mortal Orchestra's first album, Ruban saw a space for himself within the tradition. When he reflected on his success, he realised he had the responsibility and platform to represent Hapa-haole music on the global stage.

After spending the past 20 years in the studio, on concert stages all over the world and at the literal top of the charts, All-American Rejects co-founder Tyson Ritter didnt start Now More Than Ever in 2018 with the expectation it would turn into a real band but a real band is very much what it has become. In tandem with veteran musicians/songwriters/producers Scott Chesak and Izzy Fontaine, Ritter has begun a meaningful and exciting new chapter in his music career with Now More Than Evers debut album Creatrix, which will be released March 17, 2023, by Thirty Tigers.

To hear Ritter tell it, All-American Rejects relationship with the traditional music industry was in many ways the reason he was eager to try something different: simply making music with friends for fun, without any preconceived notions about what would, could or should happen next. In other words, no constraints, no A&Rs, no deadlines and no mandate to sound like anyone or anything other than themselves.

The fact that Ritter and Chesak have known each other for so long certainly helped jumpstart things, as the latter has been a multi-instrumentalist touring member of All-American Rejects since 2011. Chesak later segued into writing and producing for artists such as Weezer and Panic! At The Disco, a skill Ritter has long admired but had difficulty incorporating into his own creative process. As he began thinking about new music, he definitely knew he didnt want to write in the traditional sense with and for another artist in a studio. Scotty and I just got to talking and decided to write some tunes. It started that innocently.

We didnt have a name, or an idea of being a band, until probably a year after that, Chesak adds. We were kind of just writing for the purity of writing and trying to make something cool. Theres a huge folder of songs we made during that time that arent part of this project, but three or four of them showed us there was something cohesive there.

Having spent decades in the same musical scene, Ritter and Chesak were committed to a fresh approach when it came to the sound of their new work. We were kind of sick of guitar music, because we both come from the rock world, says Chesak, who handled bass, drums and keyboard duties during the sessions. So at first we made a rule: Fuck guitars. No guitars! Quickly they realized their beef wasnt with guitars per se, but rather the same old sound of the instrument. Enter Izzy Fontaine, who has worked closely behind the scenes with everyone from Taking Back Sunday and Glassjaw to Seal and Banks, and came up in the industry alongside many of the same bands as Ritter and Chesak.

Now More Than Ever shimmers with that spirit of freedom, its nine tracks gracefully surfing the peaks of the past four decades of pop and rock. These are the kinds of songs that used to be on the radio and certainly still should be today the ones that make you dance, shake your ass and forget about everything else for a while. The breathless electro-rock of D-E-A-D Together and the sultry power ballad Heart To Heart best embody that vibe, while horn players from Ozomatli add an instant dance party to Candle. The 80s synth-driven closer Never You started life as a Ritter acoustic song but was quickly transformed by Chesak and Fontaine into whats now the perfect soundtrack for a vintage slow dance prom scene.

To that end, Heels Up Head Over explores those themes with a tale about a werewolf and vampire getting married, while lyrical references to the ageless cool of Joan Jett and drunk, young romance make you feel right at home in Now More Than Evers company. This is a record where there was freedom in lyric, Ritter says. When youre on a major label for 15 years, you can succumb to trying to follow your last thing. That can seep into the music in a way thats so unconscious. The joy of this band is that its completely free of any oppressive overlords, ivory towers, approval processes or co-writes that have been manufactured, licked, stamped and thrown onto the assembly line.

Now More Than Ever is here to help make sure the pillars of pop and rock will never fall, and theyre prepared to go down believing. This is our little monolith, Ritter says. It might be six feet tall amongst giants, but its pure. And its truth for us. Its saccharine as fuck, and I love it.

Mascot Records is proud to announce the release of 'Voices', the new studio album from blues rockers, The Cold Stares, available everywhere March 10th, 2023. For the past ten years, The Cold Stares have toured the world relentlessly as a duo, blowing away audiences across the US and Europe with a fierce, blistering live show that belied their bare bones, guitar-and-drums setup. Now, the band is embracing a whole new kind of chemistry as they launch their next chapter, adding a third member and channelling the classic power trio sound they grew up on with their explosive new album, Voices. "The chains were off when we made this record," says guitarist/singer Chris Tapp. "Suddenly, all the parameters that had dictated what we could and couldn't do just disappeared and we were free to create whatever sound we wanted." That sense of total artistic liberation lies at the heart of Voices, which pushes The Cold Stares' signature mix of blues, southern, and hard rock to bold new heights. Recorded almost entirely over the course of just two days with producer/engineer/mixer Mark Needham (Taj Mahal, The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Walk the Moon, Fleetwood Mac), the album stands as the band's most mature, eclectic collection yet, balancing gritty muscle and tender emotion in equal measure.

If anybody knows how to fight, it's Otherwise. The Las Vegas quartet Adrian Patrick [vocals], Ryan Patrick [guitar], Nick Bedrosian [bass], and Joe Conner [drums]-have weathered personal tragedy and trauma, withstood the tides of the industry, and still stand tall. If anything, the boys are stronger than ever with a one-two punch of airtight guitars, stadium-shaking grooves, and hypnotic hard-hitting hooks. Over the past decade, they've clawed their way through the rock 'n' roll ranks and emerged as an unbreakable force. Their catalog spans fan favorites such as True Love Never Dies [2012], Peace At All Costs [2014], and Sleeping Lions [2017]. Signature anthem "Soldiers" has amassed over 66 million Spotify streams and counting-unprecedented for a rock band of any era. Meanwhile, 2019's Defy kickstarted another chapter. "Crossfire" eclipsed 5.1 million Spotify streams followed by "Lifted" with 3.7 million Spotify streams. Loudwire hailed the latter as "a stomp-clap rocker." On this trip, they've also ignited the stages of Welcome To Rockville, Rocklahoma, and Shiprocked! As well as supporting Stone Sour, Papa Roach, and more. However, their fifth full-length album, Gawdzillionaire [Mascot Label Group], trumpets their fighting spirit louder than ever before.

For The Nude Party, nearly a decade has flown by in the blink of an eye. In that time, the New York-based band has released a pair of well-received albums, an EP and played numerous shows. The band has historically worked with a producer to help them create a distinct sound in their records but with their latest effort, Rides On, the band decided to handle production duties by themselves. The hands-on approach allowed the band to have as much fun creating as they ever had at any other point in their career. They recorded over 20 songs, including some that dabbled in electro-pop and stripped-down country before settling on the final 14 songs containing the best elements of 70s-driven blues rock. The relaxed vibe of the session also unleashed a diverse sonic texture compared to their previous releases. Sonically, the album is reminiscent of Sticky Fingers-era Stones, but the lyrics are mini-vignettes that embody the spirit of what The Nude Party are going for and their growth as a band. Rides On, the band confidently says, is their best record. Its also the most homegrown and organic record The Nude Party has created to date.

'Oh Me Oh My' is both elegant and ferocious. It is stirring in one moment and a balm the next. It details histories both global and personal. Lonnie Holley's harrowing youth and young manhood in the Jim Crow South are well-told at this point - his sale into a different home as a child for just a bottle of whiskey; his abuse at the infamous Mount Meigs correctional facility for boys; the destruction of his art environment by the Birmingham airport expansion. But Holley's music is less a performance of pain endured and more a display of perseverance, of relentless hope. Intricately and lovingly produced by LA's Jacknife Lee (The Cure, REM, Modest Mouse), there is both kinetic, shortwave funk that call to mind Brian Eno's 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts' and the deep space satellite sounds of Eno's ambient works. But it's a tremendous achievement in sonics all it's own. It's also an achievement in the refinement of Holley's impressionistic, stream-of-consciousness lyrics. On the title track which deals with mutual human understanding", Holley is able to make a profound point as ever in far fewer phrases: "The deeper we go, the more chances there are, for us to understand the oh-me's and understand the oh-my's." Illustrious collaborators like Michael Stipe, Sharon Van Etten, Moor Mother and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver serve as not only as choirs of angels and co-pilots to give Lonnie's message flight but as proof of Lonnie Holley as a galvanizing, iconoclastic force across the music community.

3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by hip hop trio de la Soul and was released on March 3, 1989. It marked the first of three full-length collaborations with producer Prince Paul, which would become the critical and commercial peak of both parties. Critically, as well as commercially, the album was a success. It contains the singles, "Me Myself and I", "The Magic Number, " "Buddy, " and "Eye Know". The album title came from the Johnny Cash song "Five Feet High and Rising". It is listed on Rolling Stone's 200 Essential Rock Records and The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. When Village Voice held it's annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll for 1989, 3 Feet High and Rising was ranked #1. It was also listed on the Rolling Stone's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Released amid the 1989 boom in gangsta rap, which gravitated towards hardcore, confrontational, violent lyrics, de la Soul's uniquely positive style made them an oddity beginning with the first single, "Me, Myself and I". Their positivity meant many observers labeled them a "hippie" group, based on their declaration of the "D.A.I.S.Y. Age" (Da. Inner. Soul. Yall). Sampling artists as diverse as Hall & Oates, Steely Dan and The Turtles, 3 Feet High and Rising is often viewed as the stylistic beginning of 1990s alternative hip hop (and especially jazz rap).

New England rock band Four Year Strong have announced a re-recorded version of "Enemy of the World complete with an updated depiction of the album art. The album originally came out over 10 years ago and was a breakout record for the band. Now it sees new production and 4 extra b-sides. "We decided to re record EOTW first and foremost to be as cool as Taylor Swift, but secondly because we wanted to be able to repress the vinyl and offer it to fans that havent been able to get it since the record came out." says Alan Day. He continues "It was really interesting to revisit all of the songs down to every detail, getting to kind of relive it in a way. We recorded the drums with Will Putney (who worked on the original EOTW as a engineer), did the rest by ourselves at Dan's house, and then had Will work his magic on it and mix and master it. We had just worked with Will for the first time since 2010 on our new album Brain Pain, and figured it would be perfect to work with Will as he knows FYS old and new more than anyone. So give it a listen, come out to the tour, and party like its 2010 again."

It would be difficult to find a band that is more self-aware than longtime touring band Lucero. Since forming in Memphis in the late 90s, Luceros base musical hallmarks have remained similar to the bands initial sound established with their first record The Attic Tapes. In the history of their expansive discography, Lucero has evolved and embraced everything from southern rock to Stax-inspired Memphis soul, whilst simultaneously maintaining their distinctive sonic foundations. Years later, dedicated fans of the group still flock to hear the bands punchy driving rhythms, punk-rooted guitar licks, and lyrics that evoke the whiskey drenched sentimentality of Americana singer-songwriters.

For their twelfth record, Shouldve Learned by Now, Lucero drew on a lot of work from their past. Literally. By adapting songs and guitar parts that had been left over from the groups previous two albums, Lucero was able to construct one of its most comprehensive works to date.

I had a particular sound I was looking for on each record and there was no room for any goofy rock & roll or cute witticisms or even simply upbeat songs. Said primary lyricist and frontman, Ben Nichols. But now finally, it was time to revisit all of that stuff and get it out in the world. Thats how we got to the appropriately-for-us-titled album Shouldve Learned by Now. The album is basically about how we know we are fuckups and I guess we are ok with that.

Produced by Grammy Award-winning engineer, Matt Ross-Spang, the album is a punchy, rock and roll record that utilizes the more mature production stylings the group developed over time, and combines it with the first-person introspectiveness that the band is known and loved for.

From its original Ben Nichols-designed cover art to its credits, the album is a reflection of a band that knows itself. Shouldve Learned by Now bridges the gap musically between old Lucero and new Lucero in a manner which affixes the bands position as the perfect intersection of punk initiative with hard-earned artistry. Its an album that recognizes the past in its sound and content, but leaves the door wide open to the future and for the lessons still in store.

AVATAR will save Heavy Metal.

There are no weapons on this planet that can challenge might of the electric guitar. For decades metal has been the most powerful force known to man. Its sonic teeth have gnawed through the status quo over and over, pushing the boundaries for what can be created in the marriage between blood and machine. If a Mount Rushmore were to be carved for all the titans of the genre, it would span the entire globe many times over. Its a burning beacon, the misfits and rebels.

As time has passed, much of the scene has become divided in two equally stale camps. The first is forever stuck in the past, no longer seeking to lead. The second are those who have forgotten the most important ingredients to what made metal what it was and must remain. Theyve lost touch with the devil. Theyve forgotten how to move. In a genre best experienced with your whole body, theyve lost the lust.

We grew up together. John and Jonas started the band when they were just 15 and 14 years old. Johannes joined at the age of 16, as did Henrik and finally Simon, who left to be replaced by Tim, a longtime friend of ours, in 2012. While constantly redefining what we do and why we do it, we are among a select few who have remained a true band of brothers. Metal has been our key to the kingdom, our way to see the world. Self-financing our debut when we were between 18 and 19, we have never waited for anyones approval or permission. With DANCE DEVIL DANCE we are adamant to give something back for all weve received.

Entering back into a world -and cultural landscape -very different from the one they last participated in, Paramore have returned with a song about exactly that. This Is Why is a deliciously infectious Paramore ear-worm for the post-truth world. Of the song, Williams says, This Is Why was the very last song we wrote for the album. To be honest, I was so tired of writing lyrics but Taylor convinced Zac and I both that we should work on this last idea. What came out of it was the title track for the whole album. It summarizes the plethora of ridiculous emotions, the rollercoaster of being alive in 2022, having survived even just the last 3 or 4 years. Youd think after a global pandemic of fucking biblical proportions and the impending doom of a dying planet, that humans would have found it deep within themselves to be kinder or more empathetic or something.

When Paramore revealed they were recording together in January 2022 the response from music fans around the world was immediate and celebratory. In the time since the Grammy-winning, RIAA-certified multi-Platinum band released their last album, After Laughter-and Hayley Williams unveiled two lauded solo albums -Paramore have become more popular than ever. Over the last few years Paramores influence and popularity has snowballed, as the age of streaming organically propelled them into a position as one of the worlds biggest, most culturally compelling rock bands. For the band, who formed as teenagers in Tennessee, their 20 year trajectory has seen them grow from youthful outsiders to bone-fide pop culture icons, permeating the musical landscape by inspiring a new generation of musical talent.

Andy Shaufs songs unfold like short fiction: theyre densely layered with colorful characters and a rich emotional depth. On his new studio album Norm, Andy Shaufs songwriting veers decidedly more oblique, hinting at sinister happenings and dark motivations. The result: an intoxicating collection of mellifluous melodies and beguiling lyrics. Levitating, synth-laden atmospherics drive Shaufs storytelling on Norm, mixed by Neal Pogue (Tyler, the Creator).

In 2016, The Party catapulted Andy Shauf to indie notoriety, followed by 2020s The Neon Skyline which landed Andy Shauf performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS This Morning: Saturday, a Polaris Prize nomination, and mentions on several best-of lists among them, a track on Barack Obamas playlist and praise from Pitch- fork, The Atlantic, Esquire, Stereogum, and more.

Tennis is Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley. Pollen, Tennis sixth studio album is due on February 10, 2023 via their own Mutually Detrimental label.
Alaina Moore writes:"I begin our sixth album by exploring melodies that take me to the boundaries of my voice. I write myself into my highest highs and lowest lows. There is a precariousness in the outer limits of my range that demands vulnerability. As our demos take shape, I realize this will be our first album without any belting, the first time I cant force my way through the notes. In the studio, Patrick compresses the shit out of my mic and I sing with the gentleness of breathing. In that softness, lyrics take shape.

We want to write a big albumsomething suited for radio, but our songs dont follow conventional pop structures. Instead of choruses with universal themes, I write with a specificity that is new to me, narrowing in on the smallest details of our lives. The more we try to broaden our scope, the more we turn inward.

To keep ourselves from falling into old habits, we use instruments and gear that are new to us. We work alone and Patrick engineers. The sounds he creates are as foundational as any part he writes. We resist the urge to over edit or do too many takes. Unlike previous albums which have been more wall of sound, we make a point not to overpower my voice with a dense mix.

We name the album Pollen. It is about small things with big consequences: a particle, a moment, a choice. It is me in a fragile state; sometimes inhabited freely, sometimes reacted against. It is striving to remain in a moment without slipping into dread. It is about the way I can be undone by a very small thing."

While his formative years were spent listening to everything from Yes to Photek, Scott Hansen didnt get his hands on an actual guitar or drum machine until he left his native Sacramento for San Francisco in 1995. Encountering this whole new world at 20 years old was a profound experience, says Hansen, better known by his musical pseudonym Tycho and as the graphic artist ISO50. At the time, I was just learning the processes of design and music; both felt very similar, and have flowed back and forth for me ever since.

As seamless as his two creative outlets have been, nearly a decade passed before the release of Hansens first proper Tycho LP, Sunrise Projector (later expanded and reissued under the title Past Is Prologue). And while three striking singles have emerged since then, the sum of all those sepia-toned partsis nowhere near the double-exposed soundscapes of Dive. The product of a prolonged break from IS050s design work and blog, it pays tribute to Tychos prismatic past (the dense, guitar-guided turning points of Daydream and Adrift) but spends most of its time pointing to the projects not-so-distant future.

2023 release. Syml's music has a sacred quality. The solo venture of Seattle artist Brian Fennell, it's themes tap into the instincts that drive us to places of sanctuary, whether that be a place or person. "It comes back to your identity of being human; throughout time we've shared the same drive," he explains. His own upbringing - interwoven with experiences of abandonment, adoption, loss, grief and love - is what drives him to question how connections between people shape us as individuals. The Day My Father Died is an exceptional record. Over 15 songs, Syml offers a profound exploration of the ways in which our lives intertwine. Throughout the album, Syml weaves in familiar iconography as a means of examining his feelings towards others, and about himself.

Four times BRIT nominated, RAYE is one of the most streamed artists in the world with over 2.3 billion streams of her music. She has a double-platinum, four platinum, two gold and three silver singles to her name. She is also indisputably one of the UK's premier songwriters. Her songs have amassed over 3 billion streams, having written for some of the world's biggest artists including: John Legend, Ellie Goulding, Khalid, David Guetta, Diplo, and Beyonce. In 2019 she was awarded The BMI Impact Award in recognition of her 'ground-breaking artistry, creative vision and impact on the future of music.

During the summer of 2021, her cries of frustration for not being able to release her album were heard worldwide, leading to a mutual separation from her label and allowing her to carve her own path. Having made her public tirade, followed by her personal 'declaration of independence', Raye in effect has obligated herself to deliver the ground-breaking first album that her 2019 BMI award prophesied. In 2022 she was nominated for the Ivors Songwriter of the year, landed R1 Brits List, made her debut solo TV performance on Jools Holland and made the face of Spotify's November Equal campaign. On February 3rd, 2023, RAYE will release her debut My 21st Century Blues. This is RAYE part two. It's RAYE on her own terms. -It's the RAYE of old, but reloaded. These are songs made by RAYE, for RAYE, but within that they're for everyone who has faced and overcome adversity. They're also anthems for other women in the industry, or stuck in a cycle of misogyny.

Brit Taylors highly anticipated sophomore album, Kentucky Blue, is a drive down the famed Country Music Highway Route 23 -- back to her Appalachian roots. Grammy-winner Sturgill Simpson and renowned engineer and producer David Ferguson caught wind of the Kentucky gem after her self-reflective debut album, Real Me, garnered praise from Rolling Stone, American Songwriter and NPRs World Caf. The two legends didnt hesitate to jump in and get their hands dirty, producing the next musical chapter of Brits life story. The album is to be released on Brits own Cut A Shine Records in collaboration with Thirty Tigers.

Having the courage to find her real me set Brit free. Kentucky Blue is a musical celebration of her healing and rebirth. It exudes confidence with a touch of attitude that replaces the melancholy, contemplative sound of Real Me. It is a progression of her life and her music and an introduction to the stand-your-ground and know-your-worth Brit of today. It is a shift back to her East Kentucky influences where the cry of the fiddle, the moan of the steel guitar, the twangy banjo and the atmospheric string section are like a journey floating through space and time.

Brit continues to unabashedly write and sing about what she lives and what she knows and sees. Its genuine. Its who she is.

Kentucky Blue is Brits personal invitation to you to join her at her cabin in the woods for a bourbon, a swing on the porch and a story-telling song.
